Are you planning a trip to the Algarve? Be sure to make time to visit Cidade Velha, the historic heart of Faro. Tucked behind ancient city walls, this charming area invites you to stroll through narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and plazas adorned with fragrant orange trees. It’s a refreshing change from the typical sun, sea, and beach experience. Whether you dive into the city right after arrival or explore this charming district later in your trip, a short walk through Cidade Velha is definitely worth it.
What to see and do in Cidade Velha?
A visit doesn’t take up much time, as Cidade Velha isn’t large. However, you might find yourself lingering at a cozy café inside the city walls or enjoying the view by the waterfront just outside the gate. Curious about what you can do and see? Below, I’ve highlighted a few things you absolutely shouldn’t miss in Cidade Velha.

Admire the Arco da Vila and Arco do Repouso
These city gates serve as the historic entrances to Cidade Velha. The Arco da Vila is imposing and elegant, while the Arco do Repouso has a mystical atmosphere and still retains some Moorish elements.

Visit the Sé de Faro (Cathedral of Faro)
The Cathedral of Faro (Sé de Faro) stands on the charming Largo da Sé square and is a unique blend of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. For a panoramic view of Faro and the Ria Formosa nature reserve, you can climb the bell tower.

Wander through the charming streets
The cobblestone streets of Cidade Velha are steeped in history. Whitewashed houses orange trees and old street lamps create an almost cinematic setting. Here and there, you’ll discover hidden courtyards, narrow alleys and small local shops.

Hunt for wall art
Throughout Cidade Velha, you’ll come across colorful wall art. As you wander through the charming streets, you’re sure to stumble upon a few surprising, not-too-large artworks that create a playful contrast with the historic surroundings.

Explore the Museu Municipal de Faro
The Museu Municipal de Faro, housed in an old monastery, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of Faro. Roman mosaics, religious artworks, and valuable artifacts are on display here. It’s a great way to learn about the city’s background.
Enjoy a drink on a terrace
The square around the cathedral has several charming terraces where you can enjoy a snack and/or drink while overlooking the centuries-old buildings. But you’ll also find cozy restaurants in other streets. Personally, I think Cantinho by the Arco do Repouso is one of the best spots in Cidade Velha for a drink on the terrace. For dining, I prefer Restaurante O Castelo, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea.

Climb the old city walls
The Moorish city walls surrounding Cidade Velha are a reminder of the time when Faro was an important fortress city. Walk along these ancient structures and imagine what the city looked like in the past. In some places, you can even climb the walls and enjoy a panoramic view of Cidade Velha and its surroundings.
