Mirador del Balcón: viewpoint on Gran Canaria’s wild west coast

It’s one of the most stunning viewpoints on Gran Canaria: Mirador del Balcón. You’ll find this viewpoint along the GC-200, a well-known scenic route on the island’s west coast that, unfortunately, has been largely closed for several years. Luckily, Mirador del Balcón is still easily accessible despite the closure.

GC-200 closed; what’s the situation?

In 2016, a major landslide occurred along the GC-200, destroying part of the road. The section between Mirador del Balcón and El Risco has been closed ever since. Fortunately, Mirador del Balcón remains accessible. Want to continue north after visiting the viewpoint and drive the remaining part of the GC-200? You can! Drive a short stretch back along the GC-200 to connect to the newly constructed GC-2, then follow it towards El Risco. At El Risco, you can rejoin the GC-200.

Why you should visit Mirador del Balcón

Mirador del Balcón is located high in the mountains, right next to a steep coastline. On clear days, you can even see Tenerife in the distance. Looking south, you’ll have a view of rugged, triangular rock formations. The coastline to the north may seem slightly less steep and wild, but it’s no less impressive. I’ve read online that Mirador del Balcón is amazing at sunset. In the summer months, you can see the sun “sink into the sea” from here. It’s a favourite spot, especially for photography lovers! If you’re visiting Mirador del Balcón at sunset, keep in mind that you’ll have to drive back to civilization in the dark.

How to get to Mirador del Balcón

Mirador del Balcón is easy to reach. You can take a short stretch of the GC-2 from La Aldea de San Nicolás. Or you can come from the north and drive part of the GC-200, which turns into the GC-2. After the tunnel, you’ll automatically see the exit to Mirador del Balcón. There isn’t a lot of parking space, so it can get crowded during the high season. During busy times, people might park along the roadside; this may be tolerated, as the GC-200 is closed just beyond Mirador del Balcón.
