One of the most well-known attractions in Cyprus today is the Edro III shipwreck. The 80-meter-long Edro III is located on the west coast of the island and is a must-see on your Cyprus road trip, alongside landmarks like the capital Nicosia, Aphrodite’s Rock, the Troodos Mountains with their beautiful Venetian bridges, the ancient city ruins of Kourion, the Bridge of Love and Limni Pier. In this article, I’ll take you to this iconic shipwreck on Cyprus.
History of the Edro III
The Edro III was built in Norway in 1966. In the fall of 2011, the ship was en route from Limassol to Rhodes, carrying a cargo of gypsum boards, when it veered off course during a heavy storm. Near Peyia, close to the famous sea caves, it ran aground on the rocky coastline. Thanks to a swift rescue operation, all nine crew members were safely evacuated by a British military helicopter.
Initially, efforts were made to free the ship, but due to its position and the extensive damage, this proved impossible. It was decided to remove all hazardous materials, such as diesel and oil and leave the ship where it lay.

Where is the Edro III shipwreck located in Cyprus?
The shipwreck is situated in a stunning location, close to the famous sea caves of Peyia. The combination of the weathered, rusty hull with the clear blue water and rugged rocky coastline makes it a favorite spot for photographers. Many people visit the shipwreck at the end of the day to catch the sunset, offering great opportunities for silhouette shots.
How to get to the Edro III
The Edro III is easily accessible by car, and the location is well-marked on Google Maps. There are several restaurants around the shipwreck. I personally recommend eating at Sea Caves Restaurant, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the nearby caves. It’s also the perfect spot to watch the sun set beautifully into the sea.

A must-see in Cyprus, especially for photographers
If you love photography, the Edro III is a must-visit; you can capture the ship from various angles. Walk around the bay with caves for a completely different perspective of the ship. If you have a drone, be sure to bring it along. The sunset here provides the perfect opportunity for stunning shots. The changing sky, the black silhouette of the Edro III and the sun setting behind the ship all combine to create the perfect ingredients for beautiful images.
