Besalú in Spain is a charming town in the northern part of Catalonia, not far from the French border. The town is famous for its impressive bridge over the Fluvià river and its well-preserved medieval center. It truly feels like an open-air museum where you can easily imagine yourself stepping back a few centuries in time. I visit Besalú on my way to Perpignan from Barcelona, but this spot should also be included on any road trip through Catalonia.
History of Besalú in Spain
Besalú was first mentioned in the 10th century when the area was an independent county. In the centuries that followed, the town grew into an important regional center in medieval Catalonia, mainly due to its strategic location and thriving trade.
Remarkable historical buildings in Besalú
The historic center of Besalú is a maze of cobbled streets. The houses mostly date back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Beautiful, ancient doorways, balconies adorned with flowers and narrow alleys create a truly picturesque scene! Be sure to check out the Monestir de Sant Pere de Besalú, an ancient monastery from the 10th century. On Plaça del Prat de Sant Pere, the square where the monastery stands, you’ll find many terraces. Lunch with a stunning view; what more could you want?

Jewish quarter of Besalú
In the Jewish Quarter of Besalú, you’ll find a well-preserved mikveh, a rare ritual Jewish bath that is unique in Spain. Plaça de la Llibertat is a must-see, where you’ll find a kind of “gallery” with impressive vaulted arches. In addition, this square is home to cozy terraces and charming little shops.

The famous Puente de Besalú (Besalú Bridge)
Perhaps the most famous sight in Besalú is the Romanesque bridge over the Fluvià river, known as Puente de Besalú or Besalú Bridge. Built in the 12th century, the bridge features a unique design with 7 arches and several bends. Over the centuries, heavy storms and floods have caused significant damage to the bridge, which is why the Besalú bridge has been frequently rebuilt, modified and restored.
You can enter the Spanish Besalú via the bridge, but it’s highly recommended to walk across the nearby bridge (C-66z) to the other side of the river. Along the way, you can stop numerous times to get slightly different views of the bridge. A must for photography enthusiasts!

Medieval market in Besalú
Besalú is also known for its cultural events, such as the medieval market held annually. During this market, it feels as though the town returns to the Middle Ages. Complete with knights, craftsmen and street performers. It’s a lively spectacle that perfectly complements the town’s historical charm.
Was Game of Thrones filmed in Besalú?
When it was announced that Game of Thrones would be filmed in Girona, many thought Besalú would also have a good chance of appearing in the series. With its iconic bridge over the river, impressive city walls and medieval streets, it seemed like a perfect filming location. However, despite online tours in Besalú that promise visits to filming spots from Game of Thrones, it’s important to note that no actual scenes were filmed in the town.
Staying in (the area of) Besalú
There are several charming places to stay in the center of Besalú, and there are also lovely accommodations in the surrounding area. For example, 123ole Can Portell, the B&B run by Debbie and Paul from the Dutch television show B&B Vol Liefde. This cozy spot is about a 20-minute drive from Besalú.
Guided tours to Besalú from Barcelona
If you’re staying in or near Barcelona and want to visit Besalú with a guide, you’re in luck. Various guided tours are available from Barcelona, where you’ll explore not only Besalú but also other beautiful villages in Catalonia.
