In the heart of Sarrebourg, France (Lorraine), stands the centuries-old Chapelle des Cordeliers. Once a simple monastery chapel, it has served various purposes over the centuries. In the 1970s, the building was thoroughly restored and Marc Chagall designed stunning stained-glass windows for the chapel. Since then, it has become a unique cultural destination, well worth a visit when you’re vacationing in this part of the Vosges in Lorraine.
History of Chapelle des Cordeliers
The history of this place dates back to the 13th century when Franciscan monks, also known as the Cordeliers, settled in Sarrebourg. They built a monastery with a simple Gothic chapel used for prayer and as a refuge. Like many other religious buildings in France, the chapel underwent changes over the centuries. During the French Revolution, the monastery was dissolved and the chapel lost its religious function. In the following centuries, the building was used for various purposes, including as a storage space and even as a market hall for a period. Due to a lack of proper maintenance, the chapel fell into disrepair over time.

Marc Chagall’s masterpiece: La Paix
In the 1970s, the chapel was recognized as a historical heritage site and plans were made for a large-scale restoration. The city of Sarrebourg wanted to preserve the building and give it a new cultural purpose. The famous artist Marc Chagallthen created a masterpiece specifically for this place: the massive stained-glass window La Paix (Peace). The artwork was installed in 1974. With its rich colors and dreamlike figures, it transformed the chapel into a space where light and art come together in an almost spiritual way.
