Pont-Audemer: the Venice of Normandy, France

Pont-Audemer might just be one of the biggest surprises of my journey through Normandy. The town’s half-timbered houses look like something straight out of a fairytale. With the canals weaving through the streets, it’s easy to imagine how artisans once worked here, making it a place where you truly step back in time.

History of Pont-Audemer

Pont-Audemer dates back to the Middle Ages. It developed around a feudal castle in the 11th century and was granted town privileges in the 13th century. From the 18th century onwards, the town became a hub for tanners, who found the perfect location along the banks of the Risle River.

Venice of Normandy

The many tanners in Pont-Audemer needed a lot of water for their craft, leading to the creation of numerous canals and waterways. While the tanners have long disappeared from the streets, the water, bridges and charming views remain. This has earned Pont-Audemer the nickname the Venice of Normandy.

L’église Saint-Ouen

Pont-Audemer is also known for L’église Saint-Ouen, a church built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Architecturally, this masterpiece blends various styles, including Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. The impressive combination of these architectural elements makes it a unique and fascinating structure. If you’re interested in historical architecture, a visit to this church is highly recommended.

Picturesque half-timbered houses

Pont-Audemer is home to many picturesque half-timbered houses. These characteristic buildings are a reminder of the town’s rich past and contribute to its charming streetscape. The atmosphere feels authentic, especially in the old alleyways. It’s a delight to wander through the narrow streets, soak up the history and admire the traditional architecture.

Enjoying lunch or dinner in Pont-Audemer

There are several great spots in Pont-Audemer to enjoy a meal. Place Victor Hugo is a charming square with multiple dining options. The eye-catcher here is Le Chantaco, with an interior full of antique furniture; stepping inside feels like walking into an antique shop! Right next to it, you’ll find O’ Diner, serving burgers and fries in a classic American setting. Since Le Chantaco was fully booked during my visit, I ended up across the street at Palais de la Bière, which also turned out to be a great place for lunch.
